STEM to STEAM 2022 Conference Highlights

Venue

In October 2021, the Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP, former Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, asked General Sir Gordon Messenger and Dame Linda Pollard, to examine the state of leadership and management in the health and social care sector.
Their findings included that there was a lack of consistency and coordination in the way that leadership is trained and valued. Furthermore, “institutional inadequacy” has developed over time.
This landmark independent 2022 report has focussed the Government on the biggest shake-up in health and social care leadership in a generation to improve patient care.

Birmingham City University is proud to present

IBA® Global Leadership Conference

STEM to STEAM Holistic Leadership

This conference has been designed to review how NHS Leadership can be enhanced by drawing upon the holistic qualities that the ‘Arts’ bring to leadership provision.

Hear how content from a Health and Wellbeing & Performance Anxiety programme at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire was incorporated into a Leadership MSc delivered to Health Care students and included in pilot programmes with seasoned health care professionals.

Leadership inadequate

The landmark independent  2022 report found there is a lack of consistency and coordination in the way that leadership is trained and valued in the health and care sectors, adding that “institutional inadequacy” has developed over time. It concluded that the government needed a wholesale shake-up in health and social care leadership to improve patient care.

Birmingham City University (BCU) is organizing the conference, which will comprise six panel groups of some 30 leading academics and specialists from medicine, music, education and the arts. Panellists will discuss and debate a range of topics. These include:

  • Healthcare leadership
  • The role the arts play in our society
  • Post-covid recovery
  • The health and well-being challenges faced by many
  • How developing and understanding the individual self and how we relate to others can open the door to multiple solutions
The art of STEAM

BCU is acknowledged as a thought-leader in STEAM. This interdisciplinary way of thinking combines Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics and aims to find the most innovative solutions for business, and societal challenges and opportunities.

Alongside the unique, state-of-the art STEAMhouse, sits the stunning Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, a purpose-built performing arts building, where the next generation of world class performers are trained. Regular public performances and a long tradition of outreach work allow many to access its facilities and enjoy concerts and productions.

Arising from this spirit of creativity and collaboration, a new, bespoke programme was designed at the Conservatoire that focuses on health, well-being and performing with confidence. Furthermore, elements from this programme have been incorporated into a pioneering Leadership MSc delivered to healthcare students and included in pilot programmes with seasoned health care professionals.

The art of leadership

Professor Louise Toner, Professional Advisor to the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences at Birmingham City University said:

“These courses have been greeted with considerable enthusiasm and form the basis of the STEM to STEAM Leadership Conference. We hope the discussions will find solutions to the report by General Sir Gordon Messenger and Dame Linda Pollard. We can then apply these to NHS Leadership training by drawing upon the holistic qualities that the arts bring to leadership provision.”

Examples of what participants said include

Dr Adelina McLeod Consultant Geriatrician in the North East of England and who is also a panellist at the conference said

“It’s so lovely to read those comments. I smile and despair at the same time, we have had so many reports after patients have been harmed that identify culture and leadership as root causes and it sometimes feels like nothing changes. It’s validated what I have thought for years that we need to change how we think about and teach leadership.”
